There are so many ways to partner with the Gleaning Project - there is something for everyone! The best way to keep up with our needs is to sign up for our mailing list.

See below for ways you can help.

In Field Gleaners

This is our core volunteer need from July through November. In-field gleans are held at local farms and orchards in Franklin and Adams Counties. They last one to two hours and are held in the evenings, weekends, and sometimes mornings to avoid summer heat. Be prepared for outdoor, physical activity and an awesome time. This is a great experience for people of all ages and abilities.

Check out the calendar for upcoming gleans, sign up for our email list for weekly updates, or contact us to schedule a group glean with your church, school, or business.

Food Movers

How often do you drive around our region with available space in your vehicle? Do you live or work near one of our participating farm markets or distributing community partners? (Check out our maps of growers here and community partners here.) If you have a little extra time and a vehicle you can help us accomplish our mission. Simply pick up or deliver produce along your regularly traveled routes. Anyone with a vehicle can carpool with a box of veggies. Please contact us to discuss possible routes.

Produce Packers

Produce is often gleaned in mass quantities. Produce Packer volunteers help repackage this produce into smaller, more appropriate containers for our community partners. Repackaging typically takes place at the SCCAP offices in Gettysburg and Chambersburg and lasts one to two hours. This activity is great for volunteer groups looking to help out during the winter and spring. Contact us to schedule your group.

Produce Stand Attendants

The SCCAP Produce Stands are our flagship distribution sites, located in Gettysburg and Chambersburg. We need friendly faces and helping hands to stock the stands and encourage those we serve to take as much as they can use. This work involves moving containers of produce that weigh up to 40 pounds and usually lasts two hours, but can be shorter depending on time of day and volunteer availability. Contact us to help with this incredibly rewarding work. Let us know if you speak Spanish - this is a huge help!

Food Savers

Do you feel most comfortable in the kitchen? Help us process and preserve excess produce for easier distribution and happy eaters. During summer months, come to our Adams County commercial kitchen to freeze and can excess produce in times of great abundance. We’ll then distribute directly to those who need it most. During the fall, you can stay in and bake tasty apple and pumpkin treats for holiday giving. These will be a special surprise for our local shelters and senior centers. Contact us if food saving is your jam.

Gleaning Gardeners

The Adams County chapter of The Gleaning Project is currently operating two community garden plots to grow often-requested but rarely-donated items. Gardeners of all experience levels are welcome to help us water, weed, and harvest some gorgeous veggies. We have large group workdays and regular weekly shifts throughout the growing season. Contact us if you're willing to get your hands dirty.

Event Planner

Do you have interest in coordinating events? We need detail-oriented people to help us with fundraising and outreach events (ex: Empty Bowls, World Hunger Week, Glean-A-Mania). Contact us to join our team of party planners.

Data Tracker

The less time staff spend in our spreadsheets, the more food we glean. And good data will help us plan better for next year. If you have basic computer skills and a love for spreadsheets, we can put you to work! Contact us to set up a time to help with this important task.

C.H.E.Fs (Cooking & Health Education Friends)

Fresh fruits and veggies are both delicious AND nutritious. Help us yell it from the mountaintops! Are you passionate about helping people live healthier lifestyles? We're looking for volunteers to share recipes and kitchen skills while encouraging others along their own journeys. Contact us to join our C.H.E.F team!
