What a FRUITFUL collaboration!
This past Saturday, The Gleaning Project of South Central PA kicked off our third annual World Hunger Week with an AMAZING apple glean at Adams County Nursery. We were greeted by groups from the Girl Scouts, Gettysburg College Environmental Concerns Organization (GECO), Clarion University's Advisory Board for Leadership and Engagement (ABLE), and The Greenhouse, as well as many dedicated volunteers from both Adams and Franklin Counties.
Two hours later, we had 1,750 pounds of gleaned apples packed and ready to go to The Greenhouse in Harrisburg. The next day they turned 1,350 pounds of those apples into over 300 quarts of applesauce at their annual "Yes We CAN" event. We'll be distributing this locally sourced, locally made sauce to seniors, children, and families all winter long. Thank you to all who participated in picking and preserving the harvest! It's amazing what we can achieve when we connect our community.
We have many more events in store throughout World Hunger Week including our Fall Empty Bowls Fundraiser. For more details, check out our facebook page here: www.facebook.com/WorldHungerWeek .
