Help us with Food Rescue at North Square Farmers Market

Did you know The Franklin County Gleaning Project gleans produce from the North Square Farmers Market every Saturday? Many farmers have a set distribution schedule for their produce which means that if certain items don't sell at the market, they may go bad before the farmer has another chance to distribute. This is where the Gleaning Project comes in! The after-market pickup allows us to have a greater variety of produce on our produce stand on Mondays. We are looking for volunteers to help us pick up this unsold, but still delicious, produce.

"The North Square Market provides a walkable space to access fresh and local produce while fostering a sense of pride in our community. Many businesses who started at the market now have their own store which is really exciting and could not have been done without the support from the community!" - Jess Larkin, Co-Coordinator of North Square Market, and regular volunteer with The Gleaning Project.

North Square Farmers Market has been a staple in the Chambersburg community for many years. Operating every Saturday from May to October, the often overlooked parking lot at 50 N. Main Street is bustling with vendors, shoppers, live music and lots and lots of produce! With over 15 different vendors  it is easy to spend a leisurely morning checking out baked goods, local produce, natural health remedies and maybe try some falafel or vegan dishes. Attending the North Square Farmers Market is a great way to become involved in the Chambersburg community and support local business owners and farmers. The North Square Farmers Market also offers a range of services to assist people who are struggling with food insecurity. Individuals are welcome (and encouraged!) to use their EBT cards to purchase market tokens from the market information tent. The Double Dollars Program allows EBT users to receive a dollar for dollar match of up to $10 to use towards produce items.  For kids aged 3-12, the Power of Produce, or POP, gives each child two free $1 market tokens to spend on any produce item at the market.

We are in need for volunteers to help out with produce collection at North Square Farmers Market throughout the rest of the season.
