Glean-A-Mania 2019

It’s that time of year again! We are so excited for our 3rd annual ‘penny per a pound’ fundraiser. Read on to learn more about Glean-A-Mania 2019 why this event is so important to us!

The Gleaning Project is a community solution to improving health and nutrition in South Central Pennsylvania by rescuing unprofitable produce from local farms and distributing to those in our community struggling with food insecurity. Last year, we saved over 240,000 lbs of food and redistributed it to 19,000 individuals via our network of over 100 community partners in Adams and Franklin County. We love the work that we do and the impact we’ve made in our community.

However, there is still more that can be done.

Recent data shows that 1 in 7 adults and 1 in 5 kids in South Central Pennsylvania are food insecure, meaning they do not have access to enough nutritious food to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Additionally, less than 7% of residents in Adams and Franklin County consume the daily recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables. In a region that is so agriculturally abundant we still struggle to meet the basic needs of our community. The Gleaning Project works with growers, partners, and community members to weave a localized food in South Central Pennsylvania, and we need your help to continue our work.

Glean-A-Mania began as a way to help keep our small, but mighty, program up and running. We rely on the generosity of our wonderful growers, community partners, and volunteers to keep our operating costs low and our work as efficient as possible. Even with the support of our community, we still have rent to pay, vehicles to fill with gas, supplies needed for cooking and educational programs, and staff to coordinate the program in each county.

From now until August 23rd we're asking our friends, partners, advocates, and other passionate individuals of The Gleaning Project to commit to donating 1 penny (or 2 pennies, ½ penny, etc) for every pound of produce we glean during the week of August 17-23. Last year we raised 81 pennies and we have a goal of reach 100 pennies pledged per a pound of produce this year. During this time of year, we typically harvest between 7,000-8,000 lbs of fruits and vegetables each week so a penny per a pound donation goes a long way.
